Maralee Nelder is a well-versed attorney, and a prominent member of the Grass Valley/Nevada City community. Maralee Nelder joined the California State Bar in 1981. Except for her first six months as an attorney, she has practiced law exclusively in Nevada County, California.
In 1987, the California State Bar certified her as a Family Law Specialist, and she has maintained that certification since. She has continued to enhance her abilities, becoming a Family Law Mediator beginning 1997. In 2009, she added Certified Divorce Financial Analyst to her credentials, and has been a continuous member of the Institute of Divorce Financial Analysts.
She has also trained in collaborative divorce, and helped found the Nevada County Collaborative Divorce Practice Group in 2007, of which she remains a member.
Her experience has been recognized by the Courts. She has served as a Judge pro tem for Nevada County and Placer County family law trial, law and motion, and support calendars, and was formerly Judge pro tem for small claims court, Nevada County. She’s also a settlement conference judge pro tem, Nevada County Courts and Placer County Courts, and is qualified as expert witness in family law by Nevada County Courts.
She has been a member of various legal associations. She was highly involved with the Nevada County Bar Association Family Law Section. She served as Secretary/Treasurer, Treasurer, Vice President, and President of the Nevada County Bar Association, and as Program Administrator of the Mandatory Attorney/Client Fee Arbitration Program.
One of Maralee’s proudest accomplishments was drafting the original rules of procedure for fee arbitration. These were adopted by the Nevada County Bar Association and approved by the California State Bar Committee on Mandatory Fee Arbitration in 1984. She handled all subsequent revisions through 2002.
From 2003 through 2012, she was part of the faculty for the Nevada County Annual Family Law Update Course. This was presented with Judge Sean P. Dowling, Judge B. Scott Thomsen, Commissioner Yvette Durant, and other distinguished faculty through a program coordinated with Nevada County Courts, Family Law Department.
Maralee has been a speaker at several events, and written and edited articles and curriculum. She has a technical bent, and has been a legal software tester and trainer.
Maralee’s other passions including knitting and Afghan Hounds. She describes herself as an obsessive knitter, knitting all manner of items,.
Lynn Brooke has been Maralee Nelder’s legal secretary since 1995, the first and only position she has held since moving to Nevada County from her native Washington. She appreciates the small town atmosphere of Grass Valley. She enjoys reading and gardening, and appreciates being out the sun, though she sometimes wishes for a little extra moisture in the air. Lynn has become a knitter under Maralee’s influence.
